Expanding Access:

An Education Needs Assessment of Border Communities in Tak Province, Thailand

Surveying 225 migrant households covering 392 school-aged children across three districts in Tak Province, Expanding Access reveals significant educational gaps and barriers. While 87% of parents prefer Thai public schools, 30-50% of school-aged children remain out of school due to capacity constraints. Financial barriers affect 92% of households with out-of-school children, compounded by limited geographic access to schools. Documentation status emerged as the strongest predictor of enrollment, with 47% of children lacking acceptable birth certificates. Statistical analysis shows each additional school-age sibling reduces enrollment odds by 45%, while each three-year age increase decreases enrollment likelihood by 50%. The study identifies critical capacity gaps, specifically five high-need communities requiring urgent intervention to expand educational access for vulnerable migrant populations.
