The Inclusive Education Foundation offers internships for university students and young professionals interested in education access, multilingual learning, and community development. Interns work directly with our programs in Mae Sot, Thailand, contributing to initiatives that support children, teachers, and schools along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Current opportunities

Communications Intern

Support our storytelling and outreach by creating content for social media, website, and publications. Document program activities and help share the impact of our work with stakeholders and the public. Students and young professionals looking to gain experience in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or media studies are encouraged to apply.

Skills we look for:

Strong writing skills, photography/video production capabilities, social media experience, frontend web development, content strategy and development

Requirements:

Fluency in English or Thai; basic design skills using Canva, Affinity, or Adobe software; attention to detail

Research & Advocacy Intern

Contribute to ongoing research projects, teach quantitative and qualitative research skills, and support communications that highlight community needs and successes. Students in bachelors or masters degree programs in education, social sciences, international development, public policy, anthropology, or research methods are encouraged to apply. This position offers hands-on experience in community-based research, data collection and analysis in multilingual contexts, and translating research findings into accessible formats for different audiences.

Skills we look for:

Data collection and analysis experience; familiarity with reference management software (Zotero); experience teaching adults

Requirements:

Ability to conduct academic research in English; familiarity with word processing software (Microsoft Word or Google Docs); experience using qualitative or quantitative research tools

Enrollment Support Intern

Assist with programs that help migrant children enroll and succeed in Thai public schools, including parent communication, data collection, and coordination with school partners. You'll work closely with our enrollment team during community awareness raising events, support families through the enrollment process, and contribute to monitoring student retention and success. This position provides hands-on experience in education access initiatives, cross-cultural communication, and navigating complex educational systems. Students studying education policy, sociology, social work, international education, or community development will gain valuable field experience in addressing barriers to education for marginalized populations.

Skills we look for:

Ability to speak Burmese, S'gaw Karen, or other Myanmar languages; strong interpersonal skills; detail-oriented; ability to work with diverse communities

Requirements:

Fluency in Thai; ability to use spreadsheet editing software (Google Sheets)

What to expect

  • Duration: Most internships run 3-6 months, with a minimum commitment of 8 weeks

  • Time commitment: Full-time (35-40 hours/week)

  • Location: Mae Sot, Thailand (remote work is not available for these positions)

Support & Logistics

Financial considerations:

  • Our program budgets are allocated in advance and do not include funding for internship stipends

  • When possible, we provide a minimal stipend to offset local living costs, but this cannot be guaranteed

  • Interns are responsible for their own international travel, accommodation, visa expenses, and health insurance

We provide guidance for finding affordable local housing, orientation to Mae Sot, and introduce interns to local resources and services.​

Some frequently asked questions.

  • Can I get academic credit for this internship?
    Yes, many universities offer credit for internships or co-ops. We can provide documentation of your work and supervision as required by your institution.
  • What are living costs in Mae Sot?
    Monthly expenses typically range from 10,000-15,000 THB ($330-450 USD), including basic housing, food, and local transportation. Bus tickets to/from Mae Sot from Bangkok are 500 THB ($15) while flights are 4,000-6000 THB ($120-180 USD).
  • Can I get a job with InEd after my internship ends?
    Intern candidates should have no expectation of possible employment after their assignment ends. In the case of a job opening, we will post the opportunity publicly and hire the most qualified candidate. We are always open to providing career mentorship and acting as a professional reference for students, recent graduates, and young professionals.
  • What is there to do in Mae Sot?
    Mae Sot is a vibrant multi-cultural community and humanitarian hub. You'll be able to connect with other interns and volunteers who may organize group outings in town or into the surrounding districts. The "What's happening in Mae Sot" Facebook and WhatsApp groups are frequently active. Some common activities: Join poetry reading sessions, documentary premiers, and photo galleries at Stardust Studio See local artwork and support school-based art programs at Kickstart Art Studio Take a cooking class and enjoy good vegetarian food at Borderline Cafe Join pickup football (soccer) games Go cafe hopping at cafes like Yim's home (seriously there are so many of these) Get a bicycle and join a local biking group For those a little more adventurous, Tak province is home to many parks and wilderness areas with hiking and river rafting opportunities Take a weekend trip to Chiang Mai or Bangkok
  • What's the work schedule like?
    Our interns will be expected to work during normal working hours, between 8:30-17:00, Monday through Friday.
  • Do interns get time off?
    Yes. Interns can take up to 5 days off per 3-month period. Interns are entitled to all public Thai holidays.
