Bridging the Digital Divide:
A Gender Analysis of English and Digital Literacy Needs Among Adolescents on the Thai-Myanmar Border. English and Digital for Girls Education (EDGE) Scoping Study
This scoping study for the British Council was conducted by The Inclusive Education Foundation and Help without Frontiers Thailand Foundation to assess the feasibility of implementing the English and Digital for Girls Education (EDGE) programme along the Thai-Myanmar border. Involving 161 participants from migrant communities, the research examined gender dynamics, digital and English literacy landscapes, and educational needs. Findings revealed that while participants expressed belief in equal educational opportunities, persistent gendered norms created distinct challenges for girls, including heightened safety concerns and domestic role expectations. Significant disparities in English proficiency existed between enrolled and out-of-school youth, with urban students demonstrating higher literacy levels. Digital access varied considerably, with rural girls facing particular barriers. Despite these challenges, strong programme alignment emerged, with adolescents, parents, and educators recognizing the critical importance of English and digital skills for future employment. The study recommends tailored curricula addressing the distinct needs of in-school versus out-of-school youth, enhanced parental engagement, and gender-sensitive programming addressing safety concerns and societal barriers facing adolescent girls.
